1. There are several stories told by Herodotus about the reasons for the Egyptian invasion. What is likely to have been the real reason? Would you say that this was a continuation of the policy of Cyrus?

The expansion of the Persian empire. This does seem like a conscious continuation of Cyrus’ expansionist policies.

2. Why was it important for Persia to be in control of Phoenicia and Cyprus?

They had strong navies that could be used by Persia.

3. Why did the tyrants of Asiatic Greece tend to ally themselves with Persia?

Their control, whilst often benign, still relied on force, and therefore Persian military strength was useful to quell popular uprisings or attempts by others to wrest control.

4. What were the immediate results of the conquest of Egypt?

Libya, Barca and Cyrene submitted to Cambyses. He then attempted to fight the Ammonians and the Ethiopians but was unsuccessful.
