Egypt was strategically placed in relation to the eastern provinces. It also had great riches, and the Nile valley was very fertile, and would become one of the main suppliers of grain to the city of Rome.

The relationship was one of patron (Pompey) and client (Ptolemy).

They were autonomous (at least nominally) but ruled as an ally of Rome, and in Rome’s interests, and usually ruled states at Rome’s margins.
