His father was Mars, and thus being the god of war, was the god that imbued the Romans with their propensity for war and conquest. 

Romulus killed his brother Remus and therefore the very beginning of Rome was marked by conflict between brothers (thus prefiguring all the civil wars to come?). 

There was no historical evidence, certainly in terms of texts, but the existence of the Casa Romuli, and the respect accorded to it, suggests a substantial number of people believed that he was a real historical figure.
