Probably the chariot racing events at the Greek Olympic games, and perhaps the chariot racing in Book 23 of Homer’s Iliad. But there were possible Etruscan influences as well.

Under the Roman Empire, the chariot teams were organized into four principal factions, each managed by a different association of contractors and each distinguished by a different colour: red, white, blue, and green.

Ambiguous: they could be great heroes but it was not something a well-born Roman was encouraged to do. Similar in this respect to gladiators.

Races took place as part of festival days to honour gods or prominent men.

Evidence seems to suggest 7 laps.

Beyond the notion of a tribal loyalty to each faction, and the excitement of a speed sport, there was probably a lot of gambling associated with the races.
